4 David Kilgour (NZ)

7 Foals (UK)

‘The Runner’ is lyrically set in the aftermath of what’s described in the last songs on ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 1’. In a press release, frontman Yannis Philippakis said of the new track: “It’s a call to find a sense of purpose and perseverance despite the odds and despite the troubles we may find inside or outside ourselves.” NME

8 Wilco (US)

Love is everywhere, Tweedy assures us. But its hard to feel that way in a world of hate, racism and Donald Trump; at the same time, it’s in not giving in to such a crushing daily reality where real personal and political change can begin to happen. That’s a pretty powerful message for one easeful little folk tune, and one more example of the way this long-running band can keep finding new ways to hit us where we live.  Rolling Stone

9 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Au) 

I've listened to Ghosteen a good few times now, and I have to say, I love it. But Bright horses is what really blew me away. It was brilliant.The piano is beautiful, the wailing by (Warren?) Is brilliant. Nick's vocals are perfect. The songwriting is on point.

I can't be sure about this, but I think the song may be about a fight Nick had with Susie. The lyrics seem to imply that his baby was gone for a while but the 5:30 train is bringing her back. What are your opinions? Reddit.com

10 DIIV (US)

The shoegaze band’s third album is another portrait of addiction and recovery, but this time there’s no suggestion of a victory lap. The lyrics may wallow, but the music soars.  Over knots of Sonic Youth guitars on “Skin Game,” he offers a more unflinching account of self-destruction than anything on Is The Is Are: “Sunken ceiling and a sideways grin/We lived to use and we used to live.”  Pitchfork
