Richard "Kid" Strange i Doctors of Madness gör överraskande comeback

1 Collective Soul (US) Formed in 1992, Collective Soul is an American rock band originally from Stockbridge, Georgia. Happily, Collective Soul are not in danger of getting caught in a nostalgic whirlpool, having just created one of the strongest albums of the year. Lead songwriter E Roland proves that he still has a penchant of churning out catchy melodies. The guitar fuelled “Over Me” is introduced with Will Turpin’s bass establishing the main riff, a nice touch. Sonicperspectives.com

2 The Raconteurs (US) have released Help Us Stranger, their first proper album in 11 years . The Raconteurs make the strongest case for themselves through competent, workmanlike song construction. They’re nestled alongside softer, more contemplative pieces, like the lovely, acoustic “Only Child.” Pitchfork

3 Doctors of Madness (UK) They were punk before punk. The band that prophesied punk – and then disappeared. Doctors of Madness were formed in 1974 in a cellar in Brixton, south London by the composer and lead singer/guitarist Richard Strange, known as ‘Kid’ Strange. And now they are back!!! New album in September and here is their new single. The Guardian/Wiki

4 Dope Lemon (AU) Fan’s of Angus Stone AKA Dope Lemon, rejoice. The Byron Bay muso has today returned with a drugged out new song and clip, that will blow your mind. ‘Salt & Pepper’ is reminiscent of the minimal psych-blues of legendary British group Cymande, with Stone’s flawless crooning locking right into overall themes of the track perfectly, making for some incredibly smooth sailing. LifewithoutAndy

5 Black Midi  (UK) The London guitar band’s debut is twitchy, hair-raising, always on the move. They harken back to a more esoteric era of indie with a magnetic and dazzling style. Schlagenheim offers prime counter-programming for our current richharmonicverse-chorus-verse era of indie music. With a froggy-voiced singer and an armful of guitar pedals, black midi sprint in the opposite direction. Pitchfork

6 Proto Idiot (UK) My relationship with post-punk music has notoriously been of the love/hate variety. But in the case of Proto Idiot, it's strictly love. A lot of that has to do with the unique sound this Manchester trio has cultivated. It seems almost wrong to even call it post-punk. It might be better to describe it as "poppy new wave post-punk garage rock art", but I suppose that would be a mouthful. Fasterandlouder.com

7  PereUbu (US) The latest release for the Cleveland band led by David Thomas was inspired by pop music and Raymond Chandler's 1953 novel of the same name. In anticipation of the release of The Long Goodbye, Pere Ubu's 17th studio record, David Thomas announced that not only would this would be the band's final record, but also it would "wrap up every song and story that Pere Ubu has been telling in different ways for the past 40 plus years". Putting aside the fortunate fact that the health problems which initiated Mr. Thomas' preparations for the end of his recording career have reportedly improved to the point that this might not end up as the band's last statement, The Long Goodbye is an amazing achievement that accomplishes its mission of encapsulating a 45-year career with wit and aplomb. Popmatters

8 Black Pumas (US)  The Austin-based duo don’t shy away from signifiers of the past, conjuring the sounds of the late 1960s and early 1970s without succumbing to pure nostalgic pandering. At no point on Black Pumas do Quesada and Burton shy away from signifiers of the past. Rhythms roll with the tight precision of the Hi Records rhythm section. Pitchfork

9 The Bishop’s Daredevil Stunt Club (US) With End Over EndThe Bishop’s Daredevil Stunt Club gives us an amalgamation of the best the 70’s and 80’s had to offer. You’ll hear glimpses of Cheap Trick, Sloan and maybe even a little XTC. Most of all, you’ll hear great melodies, pleasing harmonies and big guitars. Powerpopnews

10 Possum (CAN) While the members of the mighty mouthful of a mob King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard have figured out a way to sprinkle contemporary aesthetics on 60s psych rock and drag it, sometimes kicking and screaming, into today, Toronto quartet Possum are quite happy harking back to the genre’s heyday.

It’s not that they couldn’t bring it up to date; they employ some distinctly modern heavy riffs here and a few contemporary production tricks too. It’s just that they don’t want to. Space Grade Assembly isn’t a parody; “The Hills” is an undeniable home-run, a guitar-driven tornado of twang that’s guaranteed to make anyone with an ear for an excellent riff look up from their phone, newnoisemagazine

6 kommentarer:

  1. Uj, vad detta var bra! Nästan femmor till alla låtarna.

    1. Collective Soul. Rutinerat gäng, hållit på i snart 40 år. Mycket Tom Petty här. Riktigt bra låt.

    2. The Raconteurs 5p Underbar pärla av Jack White et co. Nästan sexa.

    3. Doctors of Madness 4p Stoppa nazismen och andra högerrörelser är parollen. Visst, slagordsrock.

Cool.

    5. Black Midi 5p Hajpade unga slynglar från London. Mycket Larks Tongues in Aspic (King Crimson) här, men ändå eget. LIve är de ännu bättre. Galet bra.

    6. Proto Idiot 5p Fin övergång från Black MIDI. Lite Gan of Four och annan postpunk.

    8. Black Pumas 5p Bluessoul av yppersta klass. Rösten påminner om Steve Winwood

    9. The Bishops ... 4p Kul powerpop.

  4. Uj. Här skiftar poängen på bl.a. Pere Ubu, från 1 - 6 poäng. Även Black MIDI får spretiga poäng.

  5. 1. Collective Soul - 4p
    2. The Raconteurs - 5p
