Vecka 6-7

Bring the Horizon spelar på låt 7

Här är den nya listan med ganska blandad musik, mest från UK
och USA, men även låtar från Mexiko och Sverige. Några har varit
med förr, som Rival Sons, Steve Mason, The Twilight Sad och
Hurula, men det finns mycket annat också.

1 The Steel Woods (US) “Old News” is the second album from these boys from Nashville, Tennessee, and if that flies in the face of those that say the album is dead and we’re all uncapable of listening to above three songs, then that is reflected in the old school feel of the tracks here. Try listening to the opening riff of “All Of These Years” without recalling all the bands it sounds like. That’s the point, really. The wheel doesn’t need inventing. It rolls just fine, and so do these tracks. Maximumvolumemusic

2 Steve Mason (UK) is a Scottish musician, best known as the lead singer and one of the founding members of The Beta Band. The infamous Beta Band frontman could have lingered in the shadow of his cult-figure fandom; instead, on his fourth solo album, he sings directly about the long process of growing up. The romantic reverie “Rocket,” for instance, begins as a minimalist, melodica-spiked dub skitter, but you know it’s only a matter of time before its four-chord progression balloons into a colossus. As the song explodes into guitar-solo fireworks, you get a glimpse of an alternate universe where the Beta Band kept their shit together and became perennial summer-festival headliners. Pitchfork

3 The Twilight Sad (UK) The Robert Smith-endorsed Scottish gloom-rockers tackle grief on their life-affirming fifth album There’s no love too small,” sings frontman James Graham on propulsive single ‘VTr’, later conceding that “running away doesn’t feel so bad”. In capturing the essence of of the band in 2019 – and the album as a whole – it’s a track as driven by change and hope as it is loaded with sadness. There’s hope, too, in the in the unifying space between the fear and anxiety of Graham’s words and the power, poise and ambition of the music.  NME

4 Steve Gunn (US) Though he rose to early acclaim as a fingerstyle guitarist, the singer/songwriter is steadily developing into a poignant lyricist, now chronicling the places and people he hopes to understand. Inspired by Agnes Varda’s film of the same name, “Vagabond” paints vivid, sympathetic portraits of characters Gunn might have met out on the road. He sings like he’s scrolling through old photos on his phone, looking at the faces of people he’ll never see again. Pitchfork

5 Rival Sons (US) bring on the Electric Warmth of Rock and Blues on Feral Roots ten years into their career, the California boys are still rockin’. The self-titled track is a big shift in musical tone compared to the tracks before it. The song takes on a folksier flavor in the vocals, with the guitar work providing gentle picking and flourishing melodies that present a mesmerizing flow.  COS

6 Better Oblivion Community Center (US) is an American indie rock duo composed of musicians Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers. The duo has just released their eponymous debut album. Dylan Thomas” are as memorable as anything on Stranger in the Alps. The latter is a playful, pop-heavy track where Bridger’s continues to obsess over darkness in her storytelling. On her debut, she portrayed visions of death and Dahmer; this time she’s entering the setting of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Lines like I’m getting greedy with this private hell/I’m taking a shower at the Bate’s Motel are given the opportunity to thrive within Bridger’s unforgettable melodies. Sputnik Music

7 Bring The Horizon (UK) The Sheffield rockers’ sixth takes a dramatic stylistic leap. Amo isn’t as barmy a move as Spinal Tap’s spoof Jazz Odyssey, or Chris Cornell’s real-life crunk album, but the blend of rock, balladry and electronics is a long way from BMtH’s deathcore origins. Slightly mirroring Linkin Park’s electronic remap with A Thousand Suns, there are quiet piano parts, bleeping synthesisers, electro raps and even what sounds like a children’s choir. Mantra, the heaviest thing here, mixes trademark BMtH riffola with choir-like keyboards similar to New Order’s Blue Monday. The anthemically sarcastic Wonderful Life– in which Sykes cries, “I’m getting high on a Saturday night … Nobody cares if I’m dead or alive” – could hit home just as much with someone strung out in a swish LA hotel as a lost soul back in Rotherham. The Guardian

8 Lorelle Meets the Obsolete (MEX) winning mix of shoegaze textures and darker psych stylings has earned Lorena Quintanilla (Lorelle) and Alberto González (the Obsolete) acclaim far beyond their native Mexico, with Robert Smith and Henry Rollins among their fans. Their third album to get an international release, and fifth in total. Their gift for melody is more apparent on the gorgeous Líneas En Hojas, Quintanilla’s breathy vocals riding atop José Orozco’s irresistible synth drone. The Guardian

10Julian Lynch (US) At least historically, it wasn’t surprising when Julian Lynch became Real Estate’s new guitarist in 2016: He and the band’s founders were childhood pals from New Jersey.  “Hexagonal Field” has the pulsing percussive undercurrent of Eno’s “St. Elmo’s Fire.” The songs are wound tightly but never suffocating, the compositions busy but never finicky. They’re more adherent to familiar song structures than his previous records, too, as Lynch uses melody to map the movement of these pieces. Pitchfork

  1. Den här veckan kändes lite som ”middle-of-the-road”. Inget som stack ut. Inget att hänga upp rocken på 😉.

  3. 1. Steel Woods.

    6. Better Oblivion Community Center 4p Helt OK. Galen video.

    7. Bring Me The Horizon 4p Spännande hårdrock från Sheffield.

    8. Lorelle Meets The Obsolete 5p Spännande mexikansk psykedelia
